GCI School Council

Welcome to the Glebe CI School Council website

Welcome Arabic
Welcome Mandarin

We invite you to get involved in your school community!

The school council is a group of people who care about the daily life of the school. We are mostly parents, but teachers, the Principal and students are also part of school council.

We have monthly meetings where we hear updates from the Principal, vice-Principals, teachers and the student council. We also talk about issues that concern students and families.

Last year we discussed the following at our meetings:
how students are assessed
how school staff deal with emergency events
how students can select courses
student council elections
Glebe’s Art program (with a tour of the Art room)
how the school organizes prom and commencement
policies of the Ottawa Carleton Public School Board and Ontario’s Ministry of Education
many other topics

The school council also raises money to pay for student awards, support student-led initiatives and to fund special events.

We help organize different activities. Last year, we organized:

- A lunch to say thank you to semester one teachers. All food was donated by parents and
   volunteers set-up the event.
- A tea to celebrate semester two teachers. Again, people donated food and time.
- A fundraiser selling used bicycles.
- An evening for students and parents to learn about life after high school.  At that evening, we
   learned this advice:
              a) Know what to spend your money on. Plan and be wise!
              b) Learn to cook! Stay nourished and make time to eat well to fuel your mind
              c) Figure out boundaries with roommates; what is shared and what is personal.
              d) Partying too much will catch up with you.
              e) Party with a group of friends to look out for each other.
              f) Friendships are important to build confidence and self esteem.
              g) For good mental health, know your program and syllabus, manage time, make
connections and know where to find help. Know that we all have self-doubt.
              h) Academic success is achieving a meaningful education to the best of your ability.

School council news and summaries of our meetings are on the "Agendas and Meetings" tab of this site.

Please join us! We meet on the third Monday of each month. Our first school council meeting is September 17, 2018 in the library.

Questions about Course Selection and Pathways

2018-19 course selection will be upon the students very soon.  They will attend grade-oriented assemblies on this topic on February 9th with selections to be made by the end of the month.

At the last council meeting, parents expressed interest in learning more about course selection and pathways, a topic that will be addressed at the next council meeting, Monday February 12.

Out of consideration for time and so staff can be prepared, please provide questions you would like answered about course selection and pathways. Please note that this must be completed by Thursday, February 8.

Thank you.  Everyone is welcome to attend parent council meetings. For minutes from previous meetings, please visit the School Council > Minutes page.
